Beaducation's Mister Twister

I know that I have posted about Beaducation's Mister Twister before (click here), but it bears revisiting.

There are two sets of mandrels available in the Mister Twister line: the round and the oval.

The round mandrel set comes with 8 mandrels in sizes 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8mm. Each mandrel is 6" long.

The oval mandrel set comes with 6 mandrels in sizes 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6mm. Each mandrel is 6" long.

I have been using the Coiling Gizmo for coiling and making my Sparkle Sprockets, but found that I was limited by only having two mandrels available. The advantage of the Mister Twister Hand Coiler is that you have 8 sizes to play with in the round and 6 with the oval. The Mister Twister sets come in lovely aluminum cases. They are very sturdy and durable. Each set is less than $40 and is well worth the small investment. If you like to make your own jump rings, then you definitely need to purchase these sets.

An added bonus from Beaducation, is that Kate Richbourg, Director of Education, provides step by step instructions on how to use the Mister Twister in a well produced video on their site.

Another advantage I found was that with inserting your wire directly into the mandrel instead of wrapping it around your mandrel, saves on how much wire is "wasted". This is particularly important if you are using precious metal wire.

In the Fall, I taught a Crystal Clay class at my sister Tiki's place. After the class, I was showing her how to make a Sparkle Sprocket using the Coiling Gizmo. At the time, I didn't have my Mister Twister sets with me, so Tiki improvised and bent a steel knitting needle in the vice in the garage. Now I don't recommend this, but I'll tell you, it worked like a charm. Of course, if you knit with bamboo needles, this transformation is not going to work!

Creativ Festival Fall 2011

I've just arrived back in town from a successful trip to Guelph where I had a booth at the Grand River Bead Society Fair. It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and to meet new people who share my passion for all things sparkly. Crystal Clay, crystals from the Swarovski Elements collection and bezel settings were flying out of my booth at record speed! A special thank you to Maryanne Walczak for all her extraordinary help this help: chauffeur, sales woman extraordinaire and butt kicker when needed. You should see her work a price gun!

Now my focus turns to the Creativ Festival which starts on Wednesday, October 19. I am teaching four classes and three make and takes! It still amazes me that I am teaching at this awesome Canadian event, as I have been an attendee for many years, even before I started making jewellery. My first crafty love is crochet and I also did cross stitch for years.I have also been known to sew my own clothes and made some pretty cute outfits for my son when he was a baby. I'm pretty much an all-around crafty chica and this is my absolute favourite show.

Skip The Turkey, Let's Get Out The Beads!!!

This Saturday, October 8, I am thrilled to be teaching two classes at beadFX that are among my most popular. So, if you are a fan, you may have already taken them, but if not, why not bring a friend or relative and join me for a day of laughs, learning and sparkle!

First up from 11-1 is CRYSTALLIZED BLING RINGS. In this class geared to any level of expertise (or not!), you will have a fun time creating three rings with The Dixon Chick.

Incorporating shapes of Crystallized Swarovski Elements you may not have seen or used before, you will learn how to use a mandrel, wrap wire, learn how to properly size rings to create sparkley rings.

Materials used are: 22 gauge non tarnish silver wire and a whole lot of fabulous SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS!!

You can end your day then, or you can stay for WIRE BEAD CROCHET BASICS. In this course you will learn the basics of wire bead crochet and create a truly unique necklace that will make you the envy of all your friends!

Using 26 gauge wire, a variety of different sized beads ranging from size 6/0 seed beads to 6mm firepolish and a crochet hook, you will transform the wire using the chain stitch into a unique piece of wearable art. The course will focus on creating a necklace.

Finally! The Big BSBP Reveal!

Finally, after some technical difficulties, I am available to reveal the pieces I made from the gorgeous bead soup I received from partner, Stephanie LaRosa, in the Bead Soup Blog Party organized by the amazing Lori Anderson.

What were the technical difficulties I encountered? Well, they hit me on two fronts.

1. I have a new camera and am still trying to figure out how the heck to use it to take DECENT pictures of my work. The pictures I took, did not meet my exacting standards for lighting, so I went to Photoshop online to lighten/brighten them. Why is it that at this point, Photoshop does not want to upload my pictures? Poop.

2. I do not profess to be a stringer. My peeps know this. My comfort zone is wire and tools. Crimps scare me. Will they hold? Am I using the right crimp for this size of beading wire? Am I using the right weight of beading wire for these beads? How can I feed this beading wire through that crystal twice? Wire guardian? Crimp covers? Crimp beads or tubes? AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

Not being one to back down from a challenge, I decided that I would string a necklace and a bracelet.

I used the Squama stones, clasp, ceramic and shell beads from the soup I received. I added in an African Turquoise pendant that I have been hoarding and used Crystal Tahitian Look Pearls from the Swarovski Elements as spacers. I also added in two Montana crystal bicones.

For this bracelet, I used the following bead soup ingredients: Carved Nut Beads, handmade ceramic beads from Gaea, cream Czech beads, Squama Stone, ceramic beads, shell beads and those funky angled wood beads. I added in the same Crystal Tahitian Look Pearls and one Mocca Swarovski bicone along with my own clasp. I really like this bracelet, but will have to re-do it because it's a touch too big. I think I'll remove some of the pearls.

As soon as I opened the box of bead soup, I knew immediately that I had to do something special with my little seahorse. For some reason, Zeb comes to mind - so that's his name. I found that for how I work, the connector on the pendant was going the wrong way, so I wired around it and created a centre focal. Zeb needs to feel at home, so I added in some two and three sprig crystal coral from SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. To bring all the components I made together, I added in some chain from Garlan Chain and some crystallized yarn in Pacific Opal/Cotton and some Crystal Golden Shadow and Suede. I am very pleased with how this piece turned out and can't wait to wear it!

This gorgeous clasp was a bit of a challenge. I knew that I wanted to create a circular element to offset it, so I did using the carved nut interspersed with crystal on a piece of 22 gauge Vintage Bronze wire from Parawire. The challenge came when I went to put the toggle together and the jump rings I used wouldn't fit through the hole! LOL. So, I grabbed some chain and it worked just fine.

Here is a close up of the centre component with the side components.

I was very excited to receive a package from my partner in the Bead Soup Blog Party, Stephanie LaRosa, from Florida. If her name sounds familiar, it's probably because you've seen her awesome work in a variety of beading magazines such as Creative Jewelry, Stringing, Jewelry Affaire and Bead Trends.

I pulled a tin and bag from the padded envelope.

Stephanie gets top marks for presentation and I'll remember that the next time I'm doing a bead swap. It's the little touches that really do make the difference.

Each little bag of beads had a handwritten tag inside identifying the contents.

I absolutely love all the beads I received. The colour way is so harmonious. Although the pictures I've taken are sharp and in focus, they really don't do the beads justice. I am having problems with PhotoShop at the moment. The pics need to be brightened. As soon as I figure that out, I will repost them.

But for now, I will let the photos and tags speak for themselves.

While I was in Milwaukee, I didn't get a chance to look around too much at the other vendors as I was demoing like a mad woman at the Crystal Clay booth. But I did make time to visit one of my favourite vendors: BEADUCATION! I am so glad that I did - as I picked up a really groovy mandrel set called the Mister Twister that comes in round and oval mandrels.

I received an e-mail from Kate Richbourg, Direction of Education at Beaducation, and all around talented woman, the other day with some SUPER COOL NEWS!!! Milwaukee, Here I Come!!

As the beadFX buyer says, all I really need is my passport and money. But I'll be bringing clothes, jewellery and obviously something sparkly to work.

For the third year in a row, I'm heading to Milwaukee to partake in THE biggest consumer bead show and conference in the galaxy, the Bead and Button show.

It's an incredible show and if you are at all interested in beads, crystals and making your own jewellery, this is the show for you. There are hundreds of vendors and over 500 classes available to satisfy everyone.

A Lazy Pampered Saturday

I'm sitting on the patio of my local pub, The Congress, having a lovely Paulaner Pilsener beer as I write this entry. The sun is shining, there's a slight breeze in the air: perfect conditions for a lazy Saturday.

I'm relaxing here after spending a couple of hours getting beautified with a manicure and pedicure at Hollywood Nails which is conveniently located right next door to the Congress. Too bad Angie wouldn't deliver a drink to me. I certainly would have been in heaven.

I got my toes done with my fav OPI colour, Purple with a Purpose. I've done two TV spots where I'm wearing purple on my nails and my crystal peeps always do a nail shout out. Forget the beautiful jewellery I'm making, it's my nails they rave about!!

The nice gal next to me, Debbie, was talking about "shellac" nails. What is that? I had to find out! It's special nail polish that is applied and then cured under UV lights. Supposedly it stays on for a minimum two weeks without chipping or peeling off. I'm into that. My nail polish stays on pretty well as, let's face it, I'm a diva who doesn't do housework. Well, in my dreams I am!! This should work fabulous with all my trips coming up. Only time will tell.

Corsage Project Open Beading Night at beadFX

Hello all you fabulous blingtastic followers!

I have been off line for awhile and I apologize. I am back and wanted to make sure that you know about a charitable project that is near and dear to my heart.

beadFX has eloquently blogged about it, so I will shamelessly copy their text!

Since 2005, beadFX has been a champion of the Corsage project. The Corsage Project is a charitable organization that works to ensure that young women who are to graduate, but cannot afford to attend their prom — can have the lovely dresses, shoes, and, most importantly, (in our humble opinion) the distinctive jewellery that will highlight the evening and provide a momento that they will have for the rest of their lives. ('Cause you might grow out of the dress - but the jewellery is forever!)

Drop by on any of our Corsage Project Open Beading Nights and make jewellery to donate for the Corsage Project.

The mother and friend had NEVER made jewellery before and I can tell you that the necklace and 10 pairs of earrings they made were fantastic. They volunteer at the Corsage Project annually and wanted to have some fun, learn some jewellery techniques and support a worthy cause. A big thank you to them!

If you want to come and have no idea what to make, that's okay too, as I have some quick and simple patterns available. If you are wondering what is "HOT" right now - the Pantone colour of the Year is Honeysuckle and it is turning up everywhere. It is featured prominently in InStyle's Colour Issue on the newsstands now.

''Inside the Dream" is the GTA cousin to the Toronto based 'Corsage Project'. Inside the Dream sponsors both graduating boys and girls. They started with Peel Region students, but the need has spread greatly to the GTA.

Boxing Day

In Canada, Boxing Day is primarily known as a shopping holiday, much as the United States treats the Friday after Thanksgiving.

For the second year in a row, my neighbor Mary and I headed downtown to the Eaton Centre to experience the insanity that is Boxing Day in Toronto's largest mall.

We left at 11:00 am and took the subway down to Queen Station. We walked along the street looking at the beautiful window displays at The Bay. We then headed back inside and had lunch on the top floor of The Bay looking over old City Hall and watching the skaters at Nathan Phillips Square.

Now fortified, we heading into the Eaton Centre and walked through the enormous crowds from one end to another. We made one stop at the Swarovski Tree and the store to drool over the bling. We also popped into Reitmans to see if there were any good deals. And there weren't really.

We were home by 3:00. Not too bad. Spent the rest of the knitting and watching Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.

Twas the Night Before Christmas

The Crochet Version...

'Twas the night before Christmas and all around me
There was unfinished crocheting not under the tree,
The stockings weren't hung by the chimney with care'
Cause the heels and the toes had not a stitch there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
But I had not finished the caps for their heads.
Dad was asleep---he was no help at all.
And the sweater for him was 6" too small.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I put down my hook to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash.
Tripped over my yarn and fell down in my stash.

The tangle of yarn that lay deep as the snow
Reminded me how far I still had to go.
When out on the lawn I heard such a noise,
I was sure it would wake up both Dad and the boys.

And although I was tired--my brain a bit thick,
I knew in a moment that it must be St Nick.
Yet what I heard left me very perplex-ed
For nothing I heard was what I expect-ed.

"Move Rowan! Move Patons! Move Koigu and Clover!
Move Shelridge! Move Starmore! Move Spinrite! Move over!
Lopi, don't circle around, just stand there in line.
Pay attention you sheep and you'll work out just fine!
I know this is hard as it's just your first year
But I'd hate to go back to 8 tiny reindeer."

I peered over the sill. What I saw was amazing:
Eight wooly sheep on my lawn all a-grazing!
And then in a twinkle, I heard at the door
Santa's big boots stomping on the porch floor.

I rose from my knees and got back on my feet.
As I turned around, St Nick I did meet.
He was dressed all in wool from his head to his toe
And his clothes were hand crochet from above to below.

A bright Fair Isle sweater he wore on his back.
And his toys were all stuffed in an Aran crochet sack.
His hat was a wonder of bobbles and lace
A beautiful frame for his rosy red face.

The scarf on his neck could have stretched for a mile,
And the socks peeking over his boots were Argyle.
On the back of his mitts was an intricate cable.
And suddenly on one I spotted a small label:

"S.C." in duplicate on the cuff. So I asked,
"Hey, Nick, did YOU crochet all this stuff?"
He proudly replied, "Ho, ho, ho, yes I did.
I learned how to crochet when I was just a kid."

He was chubby and plump, a well dressed old man,
And I laughed to myself, for I'd thought up a plan.
I flashed him a grin and jumped up in the air,
And the next thing he knew, he was tied to a chair.

He spoke not a word, but looked down in his lap
Where I had laid my crochet hook and yarn for a cap.
He began then to crochet, first one cap then 2--
For the first time I thought I might really get through.

He put heels in the stockings and toes in some socks,
While I sat back drinking a scotch on the rocks.
Quickly like magic his hooks they flew,
Good Grief! He was finished by two!

He sprang for his sleigh when I let him go free,
And over his shoulder he looked back at me.
I heard him explain as he sailed past the moon,
"Next year, start your crocheting sometime around JUNE!"

Last Minute Jewellery Ideas

Egads!!! Where has this month gone? Where has 2010 gone? Christmas is just days away, but there's still plenty of time to get your bling on! Some of the last minute jewellery ideas I'm about to share with you can be done in less than 15 minutes. It will take you more time to buy the components than to make the pieces!

Christmas Tree Earrings:

These are made by taking three different sizes of Margaritas and stacking them on a headpin. First stack a 4mm cube, three margaritas in descending size order and top off with a 3mm bicone. Create a wrapped loop and hang on an ear wire or necklace. Ba-da-boom, Ba-da-bling! And you're done.

Pendants:

Probably even easier than the Christmas Trees are pendants. All you need is a sparkly Swarovski Elements pendant, a bail and something to string the pendant on. There are some fabulous shapes that you can use, from traditional snowflakes, to avant garde to hot from the factory in Wassens: Wild Heart!!!

There are lots of bails available on the market, but don't scrimp on findings when using Swarovski Elements. I recommend using sterling silver.

Why not use some Crystal Yarn or Wire Lace as your stringing materials? Drool!!!!

Combine one strand of Wire Lace, one strand of Crystal Yarn and one strand of leather cording for a perfect necklace to display the pendant on.

Oh, and did I mention each of these can be made for under $25? Woo hoo!

Maximum bling for less cha-ching!!

Breast Cancer Mittens

I was in Hallmark yesterday picking up a Tasmanian Devil tree ornament for Tim as I do every year when one is offered. As I was paying I noticed a display of pink mittens near the cash. Those of you who play baseball with me, know my affinity to this colour. I have pink cleats, pink shin pads, a pink ball bag and an assortment of pink accessories. They call me Pinkie!

Well I grabbed those mittens quickly. When I picked them up I noticed that there is a pink ribbon embroidered into them.

Here is the text from the tag that was attached to them:

So, of course I bought a pair. But I bought them for more than the reasons listed above. If you look at the blogs I follow, you'll see What Wannietta Knitting Today? She is currently having a mitten mania. She's knitting up a storm of them for her daughter. I emailed Wannietta to say I would like to make mittens too. She didn't even curse at me because mine will be crocheted!! You may also read on her blog about her trials dealing with Breast Cancer.

So I bought the mittens to really show my support for Wannietta. I think you should buy a pair too. Visit your local Hallmark Store.

It's 2:29 am Toronto time. I'm still awake. I didn't realize it was so late/early. I was texting with a friend in California while in my comfy bed with my husband and cat asleep in bed. Then I thought I would check my Facebook just one more time....

At that point I don't remember much. I chatted on line with Sabine in Germany, then Jill in Texas. Checked in on recommended pages. Heading off site looking at boxes on www.usbox.com, then www.creativebag.com Hopped over to www.riogrande.com. Checked my email. Looked at clock. Silently screamed, so as not to wake the household.

Please tell me this doesn't just happen to me....

Café, chà, laranjada? If you've ever flown to Portugal, you would have been asked that question. What does it mean? Coffee, tea or orange juice? But when you say it in Portuguese it sounds much better!!

Hazel Lima has absolutely gorgeous jewelry on her website. She sells her own and represents other local artists as well. Take a look at these great pics which I copied from her website.

Reread Steve Berry's The Alexandria Link.

Just finished reading James Rollins' The Doomsday Key

I love all of Berry's and Rollins' books. They tell great tales of suspense and adventure which incorporate historical items of mystery with modern twists.

Currently reading The Gate House by Nelson DeMille. His books start off with a bang and the action never stops!!

My Aunt Penny sends me her book club's list of books every year and when I visit her during the summer, I am lucky enough to attend a meeting. The book I read for her book club was Jodi Picoult's 19 Minutes. It's a sad tale about two teenagers whose lives are entwined and inevitably divided by a Columbine-like disaster. Not a read for the faint of heart. It was a difficult subject to read about. Not everyone liked the book, but it certainly provoked interesting conversations. This was the first book of Picoult's that I have read. Some of my friends have said her work is formulaic. I can't say whether I agree or not until I've read another.

My Art Therapy

When the stress of life becomes too much, it's good to turn to a hobby you enjoy. Let the negativity of the world slip away as you tap into the creative flow of the universe.

I find solace in painting. I definitely have my own style. It makes me slow down and stop for a moment. Okay, I actually slow down for hours. Or speed up for hours, depending on my frame of mind when I start.

The combining of colours and textures is very calming. To see each piece take form is very satisfying. To have others like my work is gratifying. I paint for me. It's the process I love.

Sugar 'n Cream Scents Cotton Yarn

I received a newsletter from Lily yarns today introducing their new line of Sugar 'n Cream called Scents. And just as the name implies, this yarn is scented. I'm just amazed at this innovation. While I sometimes have bad reactions to awful cheap scents, I imagine that I would like this. Lavender, Rose, Vanilla. Yummy.

Where In The World Are You?

One of the fun things about having a blog is seeing where visitors come from. On the right hand side of my blog there is a map of the world showing recent visitors. There is also a link to feedjit which shows how people arrive at my blog: from Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, coming from links on other sites or by some Google search.

When I see certain locations, I usually know who the people are. For example, there's a crew of friends in California, Kellie, Marcia, Diane and Rachel. There's also Debra in Massachusetts.

When I blog about certain things, there is the expected traffic from known areas. Like when I recently blogged about rewarding excellent customer service. I wrote about Debra at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee. And sure enough there was loads of traffic from Milwaukee.

I get excited when I see a visitor has come from Waukesha, Wisconsin. Why? That's the home of Kalmbach Publishing: the fabulous people who bring us the magazine and bead show Bead and Button. Hello whoever you are!!

Ring Smackdown

One of my most popular classes is The Dixon Chick Bling Ring. A variety of rings using Swarovski Elements are made with 22 gauge non tarnish silver wire. For these rings, you can also use 20 gauge nts. Once you get the basics of working with a mandrel and how to create a basic form, you're pretty much off and running.

At Bead and Button 2010, my fellow CREATE YOUR STYLE with Swarovski Elements Ambassador, Debra Saucier, and I were scheduled to demo at the E.H. Ashley booth. We decided to demo rings together. I called it the Ring Smackdown. Debra made a ring, then tapped me with her mandrel and it was my turn. We must have made about 15 rings. There was a nice crowd watching and some of superstars of the jewelry world even stopped by!! Nothing like pressure when Sherry Serafini and Denise Peck are watching!!

We had such a fun time that the gang at E.H. Ashley hopes we do it again next year. I hope so too!! They have such great products. Custom coated Swarovski Elements and filigree balls encrusted with crystals. They are a wholesale only company, but that doesn't stop you from checking out their website and begging your local bead store to carry the product. (That's what I do, right Marg?)

What's with the Weather?

The weather today was nutty!! There was a slight chill in the air this morning when I woke up. A sure sign that summer is coming to an end.

On my break this morning I stepped outside for some fresh air. The sky started to turn black.

Then the heavens opened up to thunderous applause and a light show.

About an hour later, the sun was shining brightly and had almost dried up all the rain.

Oh boy. I'm feeling slightly queasy. I made a big mistake at my corporate job today. I think I may throw up.

I had to send an email to close to 500 people today. No problem. Or so I thought.

I created a group within my contacts and copied all the emails from the database into the group. The group had a title. So in to "to:" I typed the name of the group thinking that it would just show the name of the group. I have other groups set up the same way. Or so I thought.

Well after pressing send and feeling pretty satisfied that this email related to a big event was done, I received a phone call from my boss, who was copied on the email.

They said they weren't sure if it was just showing in their email, but all 500 email addresses were showing.

Gulp!

Yes, it was true. My "group" thing didn't hide the email addresses.

We quickly composed an email apology stating that there was a computer error and that it wouldn't happen again. This time I put the group in the bcc.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

I'm going to have to doublecheck my email contact list settings.

Yes, I make mistakes. Yes, I'm human. Yes, my employer has privacy policies regarding email.

Attention. I should have paid it. I hope the price I pay tomorrow when I open my email isn't too hefty.

Rewarding Excellent Customer Service

Too often, we are quick to write a letter of complaint or speak to a manager when we receive terrible customer service instead of rewarding those who show excellent customer service. If only everybody praised as often as they complained, I think we'd all be much happier.

Did you know that when you fill out a comment card at Loblaws' that the staff member is then recognized and rewarded by management?

Did you know that at IKEA when a coworker is praised for excellent service that they are rewarded with a free meal?

A personal word of kindness right on the spot can do wonders. The person on the receiving end usually breaks into an ear to ear smile and they stand a little taller. They will probably pay it forward by consciously providing excellent service.

I like to carry earrings and rings that I've made in my purse for instant rewards.

The best reaction I ever had to this was at the Hyatt Recency Starbucks in Milwaukee. Every day I grabbed a coffee and was served by Debra. She is a wonderful woman full of style and enthusiasm. I gave her a ring that was chock full of Swarovski crystals in Red Magmasana Fire Opal as a thank you for starting my day off with her kindness and smiling face. She was so absolutely thrilled!!! How thrilled? She went out that night and treated herself to a manicure to match the ring colour. She told me about a special outfit she has that will match the ring and manicure.

If you are in Milwaukee at the Hyatt Regency Starbucks, pop in and say hello to her. You will see for yourself how warm and welcoming she is to strangers from around the world.

Sabine Lippert

Congratulations to Sabine Lippert of Germany in becoming a Create Your Style Ambassador for Swarovski! I was lucky enough to spend quite a bit of time with Sabine in Milwaukee at the 2010 Bead and Button. She had just signed her contract and so her status had not been officially announced yet. I don't think her feet actually touched the ground the whole time!! I'm honoured to be a peer of such fabulous artisans like Miss Sabine.

Her area of expertise could not be more different than mine. She creates the most phenomenal pieces using Swarovski crystals, Czech fire polish and seed beads. I learned something new today.

Rocailles is an interchangeable term with seed bead. How do I know this? I bought one of Sabine's patterns and headed to beadFX to pick up the beads required. Thank you, Rosemary for the beaducation!

I'm so in love with Sabine's patterns. Although I'm infamous for instant gratification, I think I'm going to learn great patience from working with teeny tiny beads. Like Margot Potter, I'm an impatient beader.

The Sheherazade Ring

Fabricland

I went to Fabricland on my way home from work to pick up some plastic drapery rings for a project. I was looking for 1 inch rings, but the largest they had was 1/2 inch. Well, I bought them anyway and we'll see how the project goes.

But what I'm thrilled about is the material for Fall that is out now. I've been itching to pull out my sewing machine and add some new pieces to my wardrobe. When I was at Aunt Penny's, I was flippping through her Butterick and Simplicity pattern books, on my breaks from creating jewellery. I'm also thinking about the Creativ Festival and all the great courses offered. I love working with knits. They are very forgiving to sew with and well, they can hide a multitude of sins.

So take a look at these gorgeous knits!!!!

Marcia De Coster Hits Toronto

Marcia De Coster is in town teaching at beadFX before heading to Beads of Colour in Dundas. I am a huge fan of Marcia's beautiful bead work. Her use of shape and colour just amaze me. Those who know me, know I don't really do little beads, but Marcia has inspired me branch out into the realm of little beads. I've started creating right angle weave rings that I embellish with an "I don't know what you call it" weave. Marcia was happy to see me really try my hand at it and offered some suggestions when I hooked up with her at beadFX last night.

Marcia, Marg and I went out to dinner at Amaya on Bayview, a wonderful Indian restaurant. I don't know much about Indian food, but the prix fixe menu made choosing easy. I ended up having the Butter Chicken. Yummy!!!

In the bead world, there are some people you connect with right off the bat. That's what happened to Marcia and I last year at Bead and Button thanks to Rachel. Marcia and I also love to knit and drool over pretty yarn. It was great to spend time with Marcia. I treasure all the time I get spend with my far away friends.

The best part of teaching for me is seeing my students learn a new technique and watching their confidence in their own abilities grow.

I taught two classes at beadFX yesterday. There were some previous students in attendance, but the majority were brand new, never ever taken a course newbies.

I received the following email from one student:

Hi Stephanie
I had a WONDERFULLY inspiring time at your classes yesterday, my first ever jewlery making classes. You are an energetic, positive and patient teacher who makes us feel excited about the expert work you while making us feel so competent and creative about the beginner work we are trying. My little 5 and 2 year old girls were just in awe and wonderment when I showed them my creations :)

Bead and Button Part 2

After my safe arrival in Milwaukee on Tuesday morning, I checked in at the Hyatt Regency. Last year, I stayed at the Hilton which was like a step back in time with all the luxurious carpeting and gold crown moulding everywhere. The Hyatt is sleek and modern, but freaks the living daylights out of me with the rooms all located around a central open area. Open to the ground floor. Vertigo sets in very easily, but the mojitos took care of that!

After a nap to catch up, I headed over to Kristal Wick's class to help her. I got a chance to make Fabulous Fabric Beads. It was a lot of fun!!! Here's a pic of Kristal in action. Do you spot anyone you know in the picture??

Sunday classes at beadFX

This Sunday is Father's Day and what better way to celebrate than to take a class with me and make yourself something pretty!! Daddy would approve!

First up is the Bling Ring from 11-1. You can sleep in a little or catch up on your Coronation Street!! We'll be making at least three rings using 22 gauge non tarnish silver and a whole array of Swarovski Crystallized Elements!!

From 2-5 it's Turquoise Lustre Blooms, a fabulous crocheted necklace with lots of fun elements. No crochet experience required. There will be other colour choices available as well.

Bead and Button Part 1

I was supposed to fly out to Milwaukee last Monday for the Bead and Button show, but my flight got cancelled.

This is a pic of me heading up the elevator on my way home. Not too happy. I was all jazzed to go and it was such a disappointment to have to catch a flight out Tuesday morning instead. Luckily Air Canada provided me with a limo home and one to pick me up in the morning.

It was fun to actually walk on to the plane from the outside instead of through a tunnel.

I was blinged up from head to toe. These shoes attracted a lot of attention.

One More Sleep!!

I'm so excited to be flying off to Milwaukee, Wisconsin tomorrow, I can hardly contain myself! My bag is packed and I'm ready to go.

It felt like I did a hundred loads of laundry today, but the last thing I want to come home to is laundry!

I also had to do a last minute run to beadFX to pick up saw blades, components and crystal pearls. I also bought a new top and of course had to find beads to make a set of jewellery to match.

Thanks to Jackson Dunlop who drove me over to beadFX and for lending me her saw. I bribed her for the ride with a promise if crystals!! Here's a pic of me moving through beadFX at lightning speed, I'm just a blur.

When I went for my manicure and pedicure at Hollywood Nails yesterday there was a mother and her 11 year old daughter team there. The daughter was having her first manicure. It was so sweet. I just had to capture the special moment.

Three more sleeps

I am soooo excited!!!! Only three more sleeps and then away I fly to Milwaukee for the 2010 Bead and Button Show!!! It's a time to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, take classes and of course, bead shop til you drop.

My calendar is so full with fun and exciting events and I promise I will blog and keep you up to date on my adventures.

I'll be helping Kristal Wick with her classes, which are always a blast. Did you know that Kristal is the new editor of Beading Daily? Kudos to her!!! She is such a phenomenally creative woman, I can't wait to see what she'll share everyday.

My crystal crochet sister, Laura Timmons will be showcasing her new line at the JHB booth. I'll be there helping her promote her new kits (and personally oohing and aahing).

There'll be parties galore!! Swarovski, Toho, Tierra Cast, just to name a few.

More details to come. I'm off to pick Declan up from a school trip to Niagara Falls and then I play softball at 830.

Heliotrope

My new favourite word and colour is Heliotrope. According to Wikipedia, Heliotrope is a pink-purple tint that is a representation of the color of the heliotrope flower.

Another name for this color is vivid lavender.

The first recorded use of Heliotrope as a color name in English was in 1882.

Where did my new found love of Heliotrope come from? Why Swarovski, of course.

Deep sparkling purple radiance.

As it's floral namesake would imply, the Swarovski 'Heliotrope' crystal colour is based around a luxuriant mixture of purple tones, bathed and enhanced in reflective brilliance rendered by a heavy metallic back coating.

The 'Heliotrope' back coating is heavier and therefore provides an effect greater in intensity than that seen with the 'aurora borealis' finish. I was sitting on the balcony yesterday and it was a beautiful sunny day. It made me think of crystals. I randomly posted three colours as my facebook status. The colours are Crystal Golden Shadow, Mint Alabaster and Padparascha. I received so many compliments from my sister ambassadors that I just had to actually put them together and see what they looked like. Here they are. Pretty cool if you ask me.

I loved the combo so much I am using a bunch of 4mm in a new project. Yummy.

Toronto Bead Oasis.... Heaven!!!

Over the next several blogposts, I'll introduce you to the new beads that I adopted over the weekend at the Bead Oasis.

As a thank you for doing some demos for Unicorne Beads, I was able to choose some beads. A big thank you to the Clintons: Laurie Anne and Beth! I always have a good time demoing for them. They are also carrying Parawire, which I demoed with too. Using Teardrops and Donuts and a fabulous purple in 26 gauge Parawire, I created earrings, pendants, rings and bracelets.

Sharing The Love

As I mentioned in my last blog, my son Declan was out of commission for five days with cold and flu symptoms. He missed school on Monday and Tuesday but luckily his dad's job is very flexible and he was able to stay home to look after him most of the time. I dealt with mother's guilt and went to work.

Well, after coughing through Monday and Tuesday to the delight of my colleagues, today it laid me out. I was coughing so hard it was difficult to catch my breath. It felt like my chest was imploding. I went to the doctor and as he was examining me he made me laugh, which immediately threw me into a coughing fit. It was a mixed blessing as it hurt like hell but at least he knew what I dealing with. He gave a prescription with a big warning: I was not to drive or operate machinery as it will, not might, cause drowsiness and will make me constipated.

Great! I fully expect to fall asleep on the potty! To add insult to injury, the cough syrup cost $61!!!!

So all the snuggling on the couch taking care of Declan, sharing the love, has it's price!!

What's a working mom to do?

It was a beautiful sunshiny weekend here in Toronto. Many people were taking advantage of the good weather: the Beaches neighbourhood was packed, people were strolling down Yonge Street and patios were open at pubs. Or so I heard. You see I spent most of the weekend taking care of my son, Declan who was sick. He went to the doctor and it's not strep throat but his throat is sore and he sounds horrible. I too, felt miserable, a change in the barometric pressure always does me in. We lounged on the couch, we read books, we challenged each to the Vancouver Olympic iPhone game and we napped. Oh, how we napped. So here it is Monday and I'm at work and he's at his dad's house, staying home from school sick. His dad went to work but came home after lunch.

Why do I feel so guilty? I should be home with him. Of course I didn't know that he was going to be sick today until I was halfway to work, riding the bus. His dad seems fine to leave him on his own, me not so much. I mean he had to fend for himself. At least he made a healthy lunch choice: chicken noodle soup.

My lunch is over. Back to work. Half my brain is here, the other half is snuggled on the couch with my son.

Lark Publishing has sent out a call for submissions for a new book they are producing called 30 Minute Rings. I'm certainly going to enter a whole smorgasbord of designs because I am the Queen of 30 minute rings. I am not one to boast lightly (yeah right!) but I have many people who can attest to this. I have been teaching The Dixon Chick's Bling Ring for about two years with great success.

I've taught this at beadFX, Bead Junction and at the Toronto Bead Society's techniques night. As mentioned in a previous blog, I went to Fabricland to pick up some buttons to use in my rings. I made a bunch up and wore one to my local pub, The Congress, to watch the Canada vs USA hockey game. I wasn't there for ten minutes and it was sold right off my finger!! Guess that design was a success!!!

Love That Funky Bracelet!!

I'm not sure alot of designers who teach techniques like I do will admit that what their students create sometimes surpasses their own work. Well, as you all know I'm not like most people!!! I am absolutely thrilled when this happens!

Case in point: The Crochet Cuff Bracelet. My stitches are very uniform, you can see each row easily and count how many stitches there per row. I have had students berate themselves because their bracelets did not look like mine. But I'll tell you something, each piece created contains a little bit of the spirit of the person who made it. When students cry that they've made a mistake, I tell them that it's not a mistake, they've made a "spirit spot". How boring if everyone's looked the same. It's just not possible. Different hands with different tension. Different people with their own unique energy creating a masterpiece out a some beads and a spool of wire.

I've a few students drop stitches along the way and I've helped them add stitches back in. I remember one gal's bracelet especially (Hi Toni!) as hers almost looked like a butterfly as it was wide at both ends and narrow in the middle. Instead of complaining about it, she added a spectacular cabochon to the narrow part. It turned out beautifully. Now what if she hadn't made those "mistakes"? She never would have inspired the rest of us!! That would have been a shame.

So if your stitches are not perfect, get past it and look at the whole piece. Look at the beautiful piece you created. In your heart of hearts you know it's a special thing you've created. And that probably, I wish I had made it!!!

Mine is the third one, but I love the black one best. Take a close look at it. To me, it looks far more intricate.

Shhh...I have a secret!!

I am teaching Wire Bead Crochet Earrings this Saturday morning at BeadFx. This is very popular class of mine where I teach the fundamentals of the technique and then we go wild with a huge assortment of beads. From semi-precious to Czech fire polish to pressed glass to pearls. All sorts of goodies!

The secret I want to share is that everyone in this class will also be making a pair of earrings with Swarovski Crystallized Elements, including the new Xilion bicone!!!!! Can you get excited about that?

My Cold Weather Hat

This is my favourite cold weather hat. I crocheted it about eight years ago from a pattern in a crochet mag that featured patterns by a soap opera actress. Hmmm where is that issue? It is made with three yarns held together and then I embellished the edge with a fourth yarn.

We've had a pretty mild winter so far in Toronto, but today was bitterly cold. I had a slight panic attack when I couldn't find this hat. I thought maybe I left it at a store, in a taxi or a bus. Declan found it between the cushions of the couch. Not sure how it got there, but glad it's on my head now. Brrrrrr!

Shopping at Fabricland

I was inspired by an article I saw in a beading magazine about using sewing components in your jewellery so on my way home I popped into my local Fabricland. For those of you in Toronto, that would be the one at Empress Walk in North York. So I headed to the area of the store that has buttons, clasps etc. To get there, I had to pass the big John Bead display and the racks and racks of ribbon, but I was focused and did not linger. I bought some very cool buttons to use in my ring designs.

I also bought some metal rings and a carabiner-type thing-a-ma-jig. Laurie-Ann Clinton of Flirt fame used something similar. Next time I see her we'll compare hardware. I excited to create!!!

There were two college girls shopping there who were keen to create. We started chatting in the checkout line as we were all ogling the basket of sale buttons. Turns out that this dynamic duo, named Stephanie (!) and Natasha are design students from Seneca College. We talked about the Creativ Festival where Seneca's students participated in the Swarovski sponsored design contest. It was called Project Catwalk and is one of the festival's highlights. The girls' current project is undergarments. We started tossing around ideas. Stephanie crochets, so I suggested she crochet a bra with wire!!! Think Madonna a la Dixon Chick!!!!

Although our time in line was short, lots of enthusiasm and creativity was shared. And isn't that what it's all about?

Tiddlywinks

While I was teaching my class on Saturday, I happened to mention Tiddlywinks. I was surprised that one lady did not know what this was.

Tiddlywinks is an indoor game played with a small set of discs called winks lying on a surface usually a flat mat. Players use a larger disc to pop a wink into flight by pressing down on one side of the wink.

I used to play this game all the time with my sisters and my Dad was quite the champion at it.

While I was discussing tiddlywinks at beadFX, Rosemary piped up to watch out for winking tiddlies... and of course we lost ourselves to a giggle fit!

New Crop of Hookers!

Let's just skip over the fact that I haven't posted since September.....

Yesterday I taught two classes at beadFX - Wire Bead Crochet BAsics and the Multistrand Wire Bead Crochet Necklace. I am proud to say that I introduced 11 new women to wonders of wire bead crochet. Or should I say that I have given 11 women a new addiction to contend with?

It was such a wonderful day! Every single person completed a necklace - or two or three! I love it when small groups of friends decide to take a class together - it makes it so much fun for everyone!

Toronto Bead Oasis Part I

You know Fall is around the corner when the Toronto Bead Oasis Fall show is on. It is the kick-off for the Fall shows.

As volunteer coordinator for the Toronto Bead Society, I was there at our booth singing the praises of the TBS and it's members. Such a fabulous group of women and a few men! A big shout out to all the volunteers who gave of their time to speak to the gazillions of people who stopped by our booth. A special thank you to Sue Henry, our Calendar Girl, for getting the 2009 TBS Calendar printed in time for the show and for backing me up as I was out for the count on Sunday. I have been sick since Wednesday and wasn't able to give it my all.

I was able to help out Amy Waldman Smith in her booth Friday night. You should see her new line of lampworked beads - Folk Art and Pop Art. I love them both. (I love all her work!!!) These are some on the wonderfully creative and world reknowned people I met at the Bead and Button Show 2009 in Milwaukee.

Here is a fun picture I took of Lilian Chen, Laura Timmons and myself.

Lilian Chen is a great wire artist and her work is often published in all the great beading magazines.
Lilian Chen is not only a jewelry instructor, but also a very creative jewelry designer. She loves to teach, create new styles and new skills. In her classes not only will you learn about skills, but also most importantly thinking outside the box. Lilian will guide you to developing a personal style of your own!

Laura Timmons is the creative force behind Vintage Moon Creations.

Laura Timmons of Vintage Moon, has designed her entire life, and created jewelry professionally for the past nine years, selling her unique designs across the nation. Her passion for color and design is obvious in each of her unusual creations.

In most recent years though, Laura has developed a new passion that feeds her soul: teaching, incorporating both her love for people and design. Over the past three years, Laura has had the privilege of teaching internationally for CrystallizedTM Swarovski Elements as well as consulting and designing for their DIY, Marketing, and Interior Design segments. She has traveled all over the US including L.A., New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Tucson. International travels include Toronto, Thailand, and most recently to Mexico to teach and demonstrate for CrystallizedTM Swarovski Elements.

Laura is a published designer as well, and currently working on many exciting projects - look for her new fashion 411 segment in "Bead Unique', and has just recently hosted her first cruise in November with Lisa Pavelka as the Crystal Chix. Katie Hacker is an artist and writer who started designing her own jewelry as a teenager when she couldn’t find fashionable clip earrings for her un-pierced ears. She turned her pastime into a business and now makes a living doing what she loves best – making stuff and sharing her ideas.

A prolific author whose books have sold more than half-a-million copies, Katie provides beading advice as the presenter of Beading Lessons on the public television series "Beads, Baubles & Jewels." She regularly contributes how-to projects and articles to a variety of magazines and is a columnist for Beadwork. Katie is a member of the Beadalon Design Team and has been commissioned to create original designs for Beadalon, Swarovski, and other companies.

Katie is passionate about demystifying jewelry making and specializes in projects that are fashionable and fun. Marcia's love for beautiful jewelry and the desire to create her own designs brought Marcia to beads in the early 1990's. Marcia designs colorful and fun to wear jewelry and shares her designs through teaching and writing. Remembering her own early attempts, Marcia recognizes that everyone learns differently and so takes great care to provide clear, concise and comprehensive instructions, graphics and text.

Her work has been published Carol Wilcox Wells’s The Art and Elegance of Bead Weaving and Margie Deeb’s The Beaders Color Pallette.

Rachel Nelson-Smith, author of Seed Bead Fusion, is a master beadweaver whose work is infused with her unique combination of fabrication techniques.
